If you look below, you can see the network offering up what seems, at first, to be a fairly intense look at a show featuring an “elite squad” working to solve problems in their city. Then, you see Jake Peralta and some assorted tomfoolery. Part of the charm of Brooklyn Nine-Nine is that somehow, the precinct actually does a pretty good job at fighting crime and they often do end up finding some of the criminals that they are tracking. The comedy comes mostly in some of the assorted hijinks that happen along the way. There are procedural mistakes, plenty of antics in the squad room, and apparently, Jake throwing a chair against a wall only for it to bounce back and hit him in the head instead.
We think that a big part of what NBC is embracing with this show at the moment is the opportunity to really make it as a part of their brand — something that they were never able to do before. They know that Andy Samberg has a good bit of brand equity with them already as a former Saturday Night Live cast member, so we don’t think that it is any coincidence that he is plastered all over a lot of the source material. Beyond that, we also don’t think that it’s altogether surprising that they’re using Andre Braugher to a certain extent — especially in a promo like this, given that he can be considered the sort of classic, tough-guy, serious cop that you’d see on some dramas. With that in mind, it shouldn’t be a shock to anyone that Braugher previously played roles on both Law & Order: SVU and also Homicide: Life on the Street.
The new Brooklyn Nine-Nine season is premiering on January 10 and NBC isn’t anywhere close to being done with their promotional rollout just yet. They’ve got Samberg co-hosting the Golden Globes with Sandra Oh and we imagine that there are more promos and teases coming, given that we are still 13 days away from the premiere. It feels already like we’ve seen more promotion in the past few weeks than we saw in the better part of the last few years combined on Fox.
