Timeless movie ratings match season 2 average; what this means
The ratings have officially come in for the Timeless movie after its initial airing over on NBC Thursday. What’s the verdict? It’s a little bit of good and bad news, depending on how you look at it.
Overall, Thursday night’s two-hour spectacle, ended up drawing a 0.6 rating in the 18-49 demographic. The good news here is that this matches the show’s season 2 average, and that is worth some celebration given that this movie aired more than six months after the end of the second season and also with a very limited promotional window. Other than the past week or so, there wasn’t all that much in the way of on-air promotion out there for the movie event. It’s also the holiday season and because of that, there may not have been anywhere near as many viewers out there available to watch.
However, the flip side of this is that matching the season 2 average may not be enough to get more parties interested, given that Timeless couldn’t get another network or streaming service to bite after NBC canceled the show for a second time earlier this year. There were some reasons to think that it could improve slightly last night, most notably that there wasn’t a ton of competition on and beyond just that, it was airing at a slightly-earlier time of the night.
Regardless of what happens in the future when it comes to the series (there was at least a small tease at the end for what could be something larger down the road), we at least can feel satisfied that the main storyline of the Time Team versus Rittenhouse is not seemingly done. Meanwhile, we’ve had a chance to look towards the future for Lucy, Wyatt, and many of the other core characters on the series. There was a happy ending here and the movie was clearly constructed to be a series finale in the event that there isn’t any more down the road. As frustrated as we may be with NBC over the cancellations and the timeslots over the years, it is worth some gratitude that there was a chance for all of us to get a little bit of closure.
For the time being, we are going to continue to monitor all things Timeless, mostly because we do feel like it will remain popular with fans and you never quite know what the future holds. In three years’ time, a 0.6 rating in the demo may be a really-solid rating given the declines of traditional network viewership.
