According to a new report from TVLine, ABC has opted to skip out on the spring season, keeping the Monday timeslot open for American Idol in the spring. Earlier this year, the network tried to do a little bit of a best-of-both-words situation by putting American Idol and Dancing with the Stars on the spring schedule, but that didn’t really work for the latter show all that well. Dancing with the Stars aired a short, athletes-themed season, but it did not perform altogether well in the ratings.

For those who do feel somehow like this has something to do with the controversial victory by Bobby Bones at the end of this past season, we don’t really think that it has anything to do with it. Instead, it’s probably due more to the lower rating for the franchise plus probably not wanting to cram another season in the schedule when there isn’t really too much room.

Also, scaling Dancing with the Stars back to just one season of the show a year could prove rather useful in that sometimes, less can be more and distance makes the TV heart grow fonder. In Great Britain Strictly Come Dancing remains one of TV’s top shows, and one of the things that it’s long had going for it is the simple fact that they only air one season a year. That keeps the roster of stars a little bit fresher and the quality of the show itself at a high. It remains to be seen if that will happen here, as well, but it’s hard to imagine Dancing with the Stars getting canceled at any point in the near future. This remains a valuable franchise for ABC, one that does deliver at least decent ratings and is somewhat of a pop-culture institution. They are also ways to keep it going if they ever did need to cut costs, including potentially changing the format. The first season, after all, was judged and filmed in a very different way than some of the more recent seasons.

Once we do have more to report on when it comes to the future of the show, we’ll have that news for you here.
