CarterMatt Awards 2018: Omelia, Supercorp, Sizzy, McDanno among ‘Ship of the Year candidates

Welcome to the 2018 CarterMatt Awards! This is our seventh annual year-end series where we as a site celebrate some of the best that TV has to offer! Our staff collectively hand-picks nominees across a wide array of different fields, and then leaves it up to you to declare the winner. We’ve had a fun time over the years with these awards and creating some fun debate throughout the month of December. Hopefully, this time around is no exception!

Today we’re discussing ‘Ship of the Year — one of two relationship-related awards that we do at the CarterMatt Awards every year. The difference between this award and Best Couple (which we announced yesterday) is that for Best Couple, the nominees are for TV relationships where the couple are together on the show — at least as of December 10, 2018. Meanwhile, ‘Ship of the Year candidates are either pairs close to relationships, in demand for relationships, or have a status that is somewhat undefined. Suffice it to say, these ‘ships feature characters people want to see together!

Voting rules – Vote however often you’d like! If you are having issues with voting, a handy guide can be found later on in this article.

The nominees

Brettonio (Brett & Antonio, One Chicago) – Their status is always a little bit up in the air, largely due to the fact that there always seems to be something holding the two back! (In reality, it’s probably the fact that they are on two different shows and it’s hard to make the scheduling work.) Nonetheless, there’s no denying that when the two are together the chemistry is fairly off the charts, and we certainly do hope that moving into 2019 there are more chances to bring them together. Of course, for now the #1 priority for Antonio has to be helping himself following his addiction — but maybe Brett could be there for him?

Deckerstar (Lucifer & Chloe, Lucifer) – The relationship between Lucifer and Chloe felt like it was actually moving towards something stable at the end of season 3! Yet, in the aftermath of the finale, everything feels somewhat up in the air. Will Chloe accept his devil face and, in turn, the craziness of the life that is swirling around her? That is something that the upcoming fourth season will have to figure out, but we absolutely do feel like a lot of the love is there and, more so than anything else, that’s going to be the thing that helps to make the two stronger.

Lyatt (Lucy & Wyatt, Timeless) – Lucy and Wyatt felt like they were just about there when it comes to having a full-fledged relationship in season 2. Then, his wife Jessica came back from the dead and chaos ensued. Where the two are now entering the holiday-themed movie is a little bit more of a complicated spot, but there are obviously feelings and also, hopefully, an opportunity for them to act on them. Given how passionate the Lyatt fanbase is, it’d be a bummer if this movie does not offer up some sort of romantic payoff that gives fans a little more hope for the future.

MacBree (Roger & Bree, Outlander) – This is an epic love story like to no other, but it’s also a complicated one. The love that they have for each other is clear, but some major ideological differences surfaced earlier this season and Roger needs to find a way to stop repressing how he feels in the aftermath of it. He also needs to be open to more ways of thinking. Yet, him going back to the past presumably to help her solidifies his commitment to help her, and while we know that there will be great hardship ahead for the two, there are plenty of reasons to hold out hope if you root for the two to be together.

McDanno (Steve & Danny, Hawaii Five-0) – One of the saddest things about episodes where Scott Caan is absent is that it deprives the series of one of its best qualities — the relationship between Steve and Danny. While they’re not the sort to get overly sentimental Steve and Danny love each other — they’ve shown already that they’d risk their lives (and give part of an organ) to ensure that the other person is okay. They have long been family and there’s just something that warms our hearts every time they are together, whether it’s a heartfelt scene where they are sharing a more personal moment or just the two of them having one of their carguments – they always bring a smile to our face.

Omelia (Owen & Amelia, Grey’s Anatomy) – For much of season 15, it felt like these two characters were destined to solidify their relationship in a way that they didn’t even have when they were married. Yet, there was always one other shoe that we were waiting to see drop — Teddy’s pregnancy announcement. This puts some serious flux into a relationship that wasn’t ever completely defined in the first place this season. Omelia has made its strength felt as a ‘ship, even making it to the finals of our CarterMatt ‘Shiptober tournament earlier this fall; can it prove itself worthy of the title here?

Sizzy (Simon & Izzy, Shadowhunters) – Is 2019 going to finally be the year for Sizzy on this show? There’s some evidence suggesting that will be the case, and hopefully, that will help to pay off all of the years that many fans have been waiting for something more to happen here. The foundation is already set, given that the two have built a great rapport and they compliment each other really well. While they have different interests and are far from the same people, at the same time we feel like they could come together and make each person all the more complete.

Supercorp (Kara & Lena, Supergirl) – The support for Supercorp (the reigning champion in this category) has long been strong, dating back to the early days of Katie McGrath becoming a major part of the show. Even though the two characters haven’t spent anywhere near the amount of time together this season that we would have liked (especially as of late, with Lena working on her secret project), interest in them coming together as a couple certainly hasn’t waned. They have all of the qualities that you would want in any relationship — strong support for one another, a good friendship, and a willingness to be there for each other when they need it the most. They show each other just how much they care about each other in so many different ways, that it’s easy to see why fans want to see them come together.
