First, the bad news — there isn’t going to be a new episode until the new year. It’s no secret that there is some sort of cliffhanger following the events of the fall finale (show executive producer Rick Eid told CarterMatt this recently), so that means that you’re going to have to sweat out whatever happens to some of these characters following the big episode tonight. Basically, that means being forced to wait a long time to see if there’s an update for some of the characters involved. More than likely, the return date is going to be at some point in January.
So what do we know for sure about the other side of season 6? For starters, there is going to be more story told when it comes to the relationship between Upton and Ruzek, one that has been going on for most of the season. Meanwhile, it’s also hard to imagine that the Chicago political stories are going away, either — when you’ve got Anne Heche on your show as a recurring guest star, doesn’t it make sense to try and use her for as long as you possibly can? We certainly like to think so. This is a show that probably will wade into the ripped-from-the-headlines storytelling at some point. While it does not prioritize it anywhere near as much as some other shows including Law & Order: SVU within the Dick Wolf universe, it is very much a part of the DNA.
Update: The midseason premiere will air on January 9.
How is Chicago PD doing in the ratings?
While you wait around through the hiatus, let’s make it more than a little bit clear that the series is not going anywhere. This is a series that is averaging a solid 1.1 rating in the 18-49 demographic, which is down only around 5% from season 6 (a very good retention rate). Meanwhile, it is actually up close to 10% year-to-year in live viewers, which is incredible for a show in its sixth season. That really speaks to the strength of the One Chicago lineup as a whole; while none of these series are generating the same sort of demo viewership as a This Is Us or the DVR audience of a Manifest, they continue to do really well for themselves on NBC.
