Obviously, there’s no doubt that you will see Casey, Severide, and the majority of your other Firehouse 51 favorites back on the air again in the new year. Chicago Fire has a full-season order of 22 episodes, and with that in mind, we’re not even at the halfway point of it just yet! There’s a lot of fun stuff that we’re going to have an opportunity to dive into with some of these characters moving forward and we’re more than a little bit excited to do just that … especially after whatever cliffhanger arrives at the end of the fall finale.
While NBC has not formally announced a midseason Chicago Fire return date at present, all signs point towards it being in January. This is something that we will confirm further once information is out there. It does certainly make some sense for the network to air as many One Chicago episodes as possible early in the year, largely because this is when the weather is cold and, because of that, more viewers are around.
Update: The midseason premiere will air on January 9!
So what can you expect to see?
We spoke recently to show executive producer Derek Haas, and one of the important things he pointed out is that you are going to have a chance to see Gary Cole return in the role of Grissom — he’s been busy with the final season of Veep as of late, hence why we haven’t seen him turn up yet. With him taking on the position of commissioner now, this is a different sort of Grissom than any we’ve had a chance to view in the past — he’s one with a lot of power and we’ve already seen him try to use it on Boden in the form of Gorsch. (Wasn’t it fun to just loathe that guy?)
Meanwhile, Haas also mentioned that there is at least a crossover event being planned at the moment with Chicago PD, though nothing is firmly locked in with Chicago Med other than just some potential cross-show cameos that you tend to see here and there throughout the season. If you love Chicago Fire, just be prepared for more of what it does best: Strong character drama with crossovers and a little bit of humor mixed in.
