Vikings season 5 episode 12 sneak peek: Ivar introduces his Queen
In the sneak peek that CarterMatt has for you below from Wednesday night’s new episode entitled “Murder Most Foul,” you can see Ivar proclaiming to his people that Freydis his new wife. His audience in Kattegat seems to approve the choice and is happy to celebrate the couple.
So why is Ivar making this move now? On paper, the reasoning for it is fairly simple in that he wants to build something resembling a cohesive legacy much like his father did. He wants to ensure that his claim on the city is fool proof and the more he lays down roots, the stronger they will grow. There are very few things that will do that quite like getting married and then producing a proper heir … but this is where things get a little more complicated. After all, can Ivar really reproduce? We have seen him have issues in the past when it comes to intimacy with women, so does he have another plan? Is it possible that maybe Freydis does? Maybe they are hoping that the gods will smile on them and a miracle will happen for them. Either way the first plan of action is to lock down a wife and Ivar has done that with a woman who seems to truly be inspired by him.
While it may be a little bit hard to project what’s going to be coming a few weeks down the line with this show, one of the things that we’ve come to know about Ivar is that he’s incredibly manipulative and, more often than not, thinks four or five steps ahead of almost everyone that he comes into contact with. Because of this, it’s certainly understandable to think that he’s already thought about many of his next moves, including just how he can position Kattegat to be his city and also how he can ensure that he presents the right people to his audience. As there are more threats that come his way, he has to be prepared for some of them. Painting a certain picture of himself to the public is important.
Of course, beyond just the city we also know that Ivar has some other priorities. After all, Lagertha is out there and do you really think that he is going to be 100% content with her continuing to roam around alive? Her story in some ways runs counter to his own and sooner or later, we do think that all of these forces are going to come to a head once more. It could prove to be ugly, though we would argue that when it comes to Ivar, most things do.
