Let’s start by taking on the official renewal status for the Tim Allen – Nancy Travis series: Nothing has been 100% confirmed just yet. Renewals are not something that we take lightly at CarterMatt, mostly because we understand the passion and support that goes into a series like Last Man Standing — especially one that has a fanbase that worked so hard to get the show back in the first place. We’re not going to say anything is for-certain on the series’ future until Fox comes out and officially says so itself.
Now, with that being said, we’ve seen the ratings for long enough this season to last that a Last Man Standing season 8 is a near-lock and that the series will almost surely be coming back so long as the cast and crew want to keep going. This has become the top-rated Friday show on TV in the adults 18-49 demographic, a.k.a. the most important demo for advertisers. There’s no way that Fox will want to move away from that, especially since Last Man Standing has already made a hit out of another show like The Cool Kids.
So while a renewal may be almost certain, patience is a virtue here since Fox has no real reason to hurry this along — especially since the revival’s success may dictate more negotiations and stuff behind the scenes before a season 8 can be greenlit. Expect some sort of official announcement by the time we get around to the spring.
One other interesting component in all of this…
Provided that Fox sticks with its plan to air SmackDown on Friday nights next fall thanks to their new deal with the WWE, don’t be altogether shocked if Last Man Standing goes on the move next fall. Given the success of the network’s lineup on Monday and Wednesday nights, there is a part of us that wouldn’t be altogether shocked if the series ends up on Tuesday nights at 8:00 p.m. Eastern time — something that should help the series feel even more full-circle given that this is the original timeslot that it had on ABC. (If the show performs well on Fridays, it’s hard to imagine any scenario in which it struggles on Tuesdays — even with there being some more comedy competition out there.)
