Ratings: A Million Little Things, All American post small gains

For those of you who are falling the ratings performance of new shows like A Million Little Things and also All American, we are coming today with good news on both! After these two shows took a brief hiatus, they actually came back Wednesday night with slightly larger audiences than they even had before.

Let’s kick things off here with A Million Little Things, which posted a 0.8 rating (up over 5% from the previous episode) as well as almost 3.47 million viewers. The total-viewer count for the series is the best for the show in a good month, and that does prove further that there is a stable audience for this series. Whether or not that turns into something more beyond this season remains to be seen, but we’re starting to get a little more optimistic that maybe this show could end up returning for another batch of episodes. There’s still a ways to go until ABC makes up their mind, but we do think the series is helped by some extremely-strong DVR viewership. It’s one of the biggest percentage-gainers in DVR viewing out of every show on network TV.

Meanwhile, there’s some good news over on The CW with All American — while the football drama has struggled to find and maintain a devoted viewership over the course of the fall, at least Wednesday’s installment generated a 0.3 rating (up over 10% from the last episode) and also close to 770,000 viewers. That is the biggest live+same-day audience for the series to date, pending any sort of adjustments later in the final ratings. All American is a show that The CW needs to be patient on and play the long game — it’s got quality behind it, but this is also a brand-new series and it doesn’t have the same sort of built-in following that a show from the Arrowverse, The Vampire Diaries universe, or Charmed does. It has to figure things out a little bit more on its own over time. It could get there, and we do think that if it can stay fairly stable it will remain in contention.

Both All American and A Million Little Things were each picked up for more updates beyond their initial order, so we do think that this means something.  Neither show has a 22-episode season, but that seems to be more for story / scheduling reasons.
