This Is Us season 3 fall finale: What does Jack know about Nicky?

At the end of tonight’s episode, the news came out that Jack’s brother has actually been alive for all of these years and seemingly living out his days not too far from Pittsburgh — it’s not like he has been completely out of reach for anyone in the family. Yet, it doesn’t seem like any living character, especially Rebecca, knows of his existence. (Does that also go for Miguel?) Now that Kevin knows the truth that his uncle didn’t die overseas in the war, this is when he could start asking some serious questions, including how much his father may have hidden.
Of course, at the moment, show boss Dan Fogelman isn’t revealing much. Instead, this is what he had to offer in a new interview Entertainment Weekly after the episode:
If as we’re saying, Nicky’s alive and Jack in present day has been carrying that, it’s not quite mourning as much as: What happened and what has Jack been hiding, and why? Psychologically it’s a big part of what we get into in the back half of the season pretty quickly. Which is, not just what happened, not just where is and what happened to Nicky, but also, what was going on with Jack all of this time? What did Jack know — or not know? And then, the last component of it is: In the present day, as some stuff starts coming to light to their family, what is the reaction of family members who learn that something might have been kept from them for a very long time?
Fogelman added that the Nicky story is going to unravel within the first few episodes of the show’s back half, and we don’t think that we can discount what’s going to happen when Rebecca finds out about Nicky. If she really doesn’t know, does this change her feeling on her late husband — or, does she realize that he probably did it for a reason? She knew that he wasn’t the sort of person who wanted to open up about what happened in his past. There was often a pretty darn good reason for that!
