Sunday night’s new episode, which featured the death of at least one important character, ending up drawing overall a 2.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic, which is virtually in line with the entirety of the season to date. What that does show is that The Walking Dead seems to have a stable audience regardless of whether or not Andrew Lincoln is a part of the cast, which is something that could be key to the show’s long-term future. It withstood the departure of Rick Grimes admittedly better than we predicted that it would, with the majority of its diehard viewers staying loyal and opting to continue to dive in to some of these stories.
What’s going to matter most for the future of The Walking Dead is what happens in the numbers when the show ends up premiering in February with the second half of the season. Are all of the viewers who stuck around following Rick’s exit going to continue to do so? It was one thing for them to stick around the show when it was a part of their everyday viewing pattern, but now they’ve got a nice chunk of more than two months in order to determine whether or not they want to continue to do so. That’s a lot of time for them to formulate pretty much whatever decision that they want. They can either choose to stick around with the AMC series or simply move on, but clearly, the network is not plotting the end the franchise anytime soon. They recently plotted out their intention to do a series of AMC films about Rick Grimes, and beyond that both Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride have signed new deals for them to remain with the franchise in some capacity moving forward.
Is it possible that The Walking Dead may eventually move away from a series form and shift over more towards movies? Maybe, but we don’t get the intention that this is immediate. We imagine that there will be at least one additional season, and beyond that the franchise does still have the Fear the Walking Dead crossover to also think about here. It will be premiering on AMC in the new year, more than likely the spring / summer. We’ll have more information on that as we inch closer to its own premiere.
