According to a new report from Deadline, CBS has declined to order additional episodes beyond the initial fifteen episodes that were initially picked up. What’s the reason for that? A lot of it has to do with the way in which the network is scheduling their midseason lineup. The network is going hard on many unscripted programs throughout midseason, whether that be reality show The World’s Best or the return of Celebrity Big Brother to the air. Eventually, SEAL Team is going to shift over in order to fill the timeslot occupied currently by Criminal Minds, and our current expectation is that there will be episodes that are at least in the first several weeks of 2019.
So is this decision by CBS bad news for the future of Criminal Minds? It is a cause for concern, but it’s also not something altogether surprising. While there was always a hope that the network would order more episodes, it’s been clear for a while that this was probably not in the cards given A) some of the midseason shows they had coming up and B) the live+same-day ratings so far in season 14. Criminal Minds is averaging in total a 0.8 rating in the 18-49 demographic, down by a good margin versus its season 13 average. The good news is that this past episode, which aired on the night before Thanksgiving, generated the show’s strongest performance of the season so far.
If you want a season 15…
The biggest advice we can offer is that you continue to watch new episodes of Criminal Minds live, and we mean that even more so if you are a Nielsen family. If you can’t see it live, be sure to DVR it or watch it via some other mode in which all parties involved can make ad revenue off of your viewership. Given that CBS does not have the same ownership stake in Criminal Minds that they have in many other shows, there is less incentive for them to keep it around. With that in mind, it probably is going to take even stronger ratings and support to get it back for another season than the majority of the other shows that are out there on CBS.
Criminal Minds is off on Wednesday night, but will return for new episodes once more in December.
