The Affair season 5: Analyzing the official Showtime logline

As we approach this season, though, we know that there are many specific challenges coming up. Take, for example, the departure of Ruth Wilson, and then also some of the rumors suggesting that we will only see Joshua Jackson for one or two episodes, if that. We’ve also got Anna Paquin coming on board as an adult version of Joanie, Alison and Cole’s daughter. There are flash-forwards ahead, and to go along with that, hopefully a lot of emotional pain and introspection. This is a series that is, in part, about people just trying to figure themselves out, and we hope that Noah and Helen (two of the most important characters in the present) turn out to find some of what they’ve long been looking for.
What else do we know about season 5? Well, the official Showtime logline (via TVLine) gives you some sort of a sense:
“[The final season] will chronicle the aftermath of the [Season 4] finale’s horrific events and find the characters coming to terms with the consequences of their choices — as they make the realization that if they really want to change their futures, they must first face the past. This final season is about how everything does really fall apart in the end, but somewhere in that wreckage, the seeds of change finally sprout.”
As we work towards the end of the series, we hope that there are still a few different surprises — but also just a story that makes sense and is true to what The Affair really is. This is a series that is really trying to take on a lot of big, super-ambitious stuff in this final season and we recognize that there are so many different ways in which it could go awry. It is going to take a lot of focus and a lot of smart writing in order to fully pull this final season off. Luckily, we imagine that the team behind the scenes is able to pull this off.
