Legacies boss Julie Plec explains Scream shout-out in episode 4

Last night, Legacies episode 4 on The CW delivered a more-than-welcome surprise, especially for Scream fans — an homage to the iconic Ghostface mask. That mask has appeared in various iterations both in the feature film franchise and then also the MTV series, which has a third season that is still waiting in limbo to premiere. The status of this show remains one of our biggest mysteries, given how long ago work was done on it and how eager we’ve been to see the end product. (The third season is short, and the scuttlebutt has been that it could air as a part of just some sort of limited series.)

So why did Legacies decide to pay homage to Scream? As it turns out, the reasoning was two-fold — the ties that showrunner Julie Plec had to the original project, and then also the status of executive producer Brett Matthews on the aforementioned Scream season 3. Take a look at some of what Plec had to say on the subject of the Ghostface mask via Twitter:

Thanks to Fun World for letting us use him. As many of you know, I was Wes Craven’s assistant on SCREAM. I remember the day that his producer found the mask in the kid’s bedroom of a house they were scouting. The studio tried to have a different version of the mask designed so that they could own it for merchandising. Alas, every different version sucked. Wes stuck with the store-bought mask and Fun World held on to ownership. Making SCREAM was one of the highlights of my life. It was the very first movie I worked on and it’s where [Kevin Williamson] and I fell in love. And years later, [Brett Matthews] was hired to be the show-runner of Scream Season 3. We were both excited to give Ghostface a shout-out.

This wasn’t the only tie-in that existed in Legacies episode 4 — there was also a brief appearance from the iconic The Flash villain Gorilla Grodd, which was done after conversations with DC Comics and everyone over at Greg Berlanti’s production company. Basically, there’s no reason for anyone to shy away from having some of this come into fruition: It’s free publicity! Having one franchise featured in another is nothing short of great promotion … and maybe it’s a reminder to some higher-ups somewhere that Scream actually does need to come out at some point this century. How long do they really expect everyone to wait in order to see him? We almost do wish that Scream aired on The CW, given that it seems like the perfect home for it at this point and we feel like they would do the story right.
