The CW gives Charmed, Legacies, and All American additional episodes
For the sake of giving all three shows their proper due, let’s go through these one by one.
Charmed – The reboot of the classic series is going to be getting a full 22-episode season, which makes it the only new series on the air at The CW with that distinction. It does make sense, given that this has been the highest-rated of the three series in live viewers 18-49. It also establishes some stability for the network for their new Sunday-night lineup. This show has been paired up with Supergirl and with these added episodes in mind, it’s pretty much a guarantee now that it will remain on the air, pending some sort of head-spinning schedule change, for the remainder of the season.
Legacies – Meanwhile, the spin-off to The Originals (which was, in turn, a spin-off to The Vampire Diaries) has formally received an additional three episodes, bringing its order to 16. Legacies improved in the 18-49 demographic in week 2 and it’s also one of the network’s most-successful digital shows so far this season. We do think that it probably could’ve done a 22-episode season, but limiting it to 16 may be The CW’s way of keeping the story tight and also making room for some other new shows to premiere. They do have some more on the docket, including In the Dark and then also Roswell, New Mexico insofar as new series go. There are also returning series out there still including The 100, Jane the Virgin, and iZombie.
All American – Finally, the football drama is getting another three episodes of its own, which puts its total order at 16 as well. This is a show that is going to require more patience from the network’s point of view. It’s not coming from an already established franchise and it’s also not a reboot; it may be based on a true story, but a good 99% of potential viewers won’t know anything about that. Its ratings have been low but steady, and we think that with streaming + more attention given to it, there is at least an opportunity that it can pick up some further viewership over time.
It’s going to be some time before the future of any of these shows is decided — think in terms of spring. We’re actually optimistic about all of them at the moment, especially when you remember that Jane the Virgin, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, and iZombie are all set to end this season — also, because they have an extra night of programming they need shows to fill those time slots.
