Alex Trebek remaining on Jeopardy! through 2022 with new deal

Jeopardy

While there have been rumors about Alex Trebek’s departure of Jeopardy! for some time, it’s not going to happen in the near future.

Today, it was confirmed via Sony Pictures Television that Trebek will be a part of the long-running game show until 2022 thanks to a new pact. This is similar to the one that was also just signed with Wheel of Fortune and hosts Pat Sajak and Vanna White. These two shows remain at the forefront of the ratings for all syndicated game shows, with them both serving as a tradition for many families. Jeopardy! is, in particular a haven for trivia buffs all over the country — getting on the show certainly is a major goal for a number of people out there.

In a statement confirming the news, Mike Hopkins, the chairman for Sony Pictures Television, had the following to say:

“Pat, Vanna and Alex are simply the best. Night after night, they seamlessly entertain generations of fans on two of the most beloved television programs on air. We are thrilled that they’ll continue to do so through 2022.”

At this point, we’re not willing to say when any of these people should leave their shows — beyond that, we certainly don’t want to see it happen. It’s hard to imagine any of these series without them, even if at one point we’re sure that it will. It’s a similar situation to when Bob Barker was the host of The Price Is Right — he was so ingrained in the fabric of that series that it was almost impossible to imagine someone else in that role. Yet, over time, Drew Carey managed to get an audience of his own, and for CBS there the hope may be that a new generation of viewers feel the same way about him that previous ones did about Barker. The same could happen for Trebek, Sajak, and White, but we don’t want to see any of that in the near future.
