If you see a little bit less of Jesse L. Martin on The Flash coming up this season, there is a reason for it — and no, he is not planning to depart the series.

According to TVLine, Martin suffered a back injury over the most-recent hiatus and will be taking a medical leave from the series in order to recover. Here is what a rep for studio Warner Bros. TV had to say on the subject: “We wish him a full and speedy recovery and look forward to his return as Detective Joe West.”

With any of these shows health comes first, so here’s to hoping that Martin is able to heal up and get better so that he can have a big role on the series later on this season. He has turned up throughout the first handful of episodes, even if his character has not had the most prominent of roles. When he does take some time away, the aforementioned site does not that it will be addressed in some shape or form. The writers will likely figure out some sort of reason why Joe is gone — maybe he’s just going to go spend some time with Wally, wherever Wally is in the world at the moment.

As for some of the other characters, it certainly feels like they are going to have quite a bit on their plate trying to deal with Cicada, the Big Bad for this season and someone who seems to be operating with a very specific purpose. He’s an interesting guy in that he’s both incredibly powerful and super-vulnerable at the same exact time.
