Station 19 season 2 gets full-season order over at ABC

Station 19

For many out there, it may have been assumed that Station 19 season 2 would be getting a full season. Now, it’s official.

Today, ABC confirmed that they have moved the Jaina Lee Ortiz series forward from 13 episodes to 22 on the strength of some solid live+same-day ratings the past few weeks. While the numbers for the series have not come close to matching the flagship Grey’s Anatomy, a recent crossover story between the two shows produced some rather-favorable results and the numbers have been very consistent. Viewers who caught Station 19 in the early going have stuck with it and that means a lot for the long-term success of the series. It helps that it has the Grey’s Anatomy brand to it, and it’s also useful to ABC as a show that you can really dive into at any point and really still understand precisely what’s going down.

So what does this full-season order mean for the show’s season 3 prospects? A lot. If the series can keep its numbers fairly steady the rest of the season, it’s easy to be confident that it will be back for at least one more year. We do wonder more what happens to it in the event that Grey’s Anatomy ends, but that’s a question for now the road since it feels pretty assured that Grey’s Anatomy is going to have at least one more year. After all, Ellen Pompeo earlier this year signed a two-year deal to continue playing Meredith Grey. We also think ABC will want to keep Station 19 around as long as possible due to its ties to Shondaland, especially since Shonda Rhimes is over at Netflix now under a new pact. She isn’t creating new series via ABC anymore. (Station 19 was created by longtime Grey’s Anatomy executive producer Stacy McKee.)

Station 19 will continue airing new episodes on ABC Thursday nights at 9:00 p.m. Eastern time. If you do want to get some more information regarding what’s coming up next, we suggest that you head over to the link here.
