Saturday Night Live: Paul Simon performs ‘Bridge Over Troubled Water,’ ‘Can’t Run But’

Saturday Night Live review

Paul Simon was the musical guest for this weekend’s Saturday Night Livewhich is certainly a job that he had held before in the past. He’s one of the most noteworthy hosts in the history of the series, and to go along with that, he also just so happens to be one of the best singer-songwriters of all time.

The song that Simon led off this week with was “Can’t Run But,” one of the “new” songs that is on his final studio album — which are reworked versions of classic songs from earlier in his career (but after his Simon & Garfunkel days.) This song was originally recorded almost three decades ago and we do think that it does still work today in its current form — yet, we’re also such a Simon fan that we’ll always love his raw, organic performances.

Basically, if you love the music of Simon, there is a reasonably good job that you also enjoyed this. Just remember that there is more music coming later. (An update soon.)

Simon’s second song was actually not on his new album, but was a reworked version of “Bridge Over Troubled Water,” quite possibly one of the greatest songs in music history. The moment that the audience figured out just what the song was you could sense the reaction in the room — this was something history and not the sort of thing that you get to hear on a regular basis. It was on a little bit earlier in the show than the typical second song, but we certainly don’t mind that given that it was nothing short of extraordinary to hear all over again.
