The Walking Dead season 9: Sonequa Martin-Green returning

Walking Dead season 8

This weekend, we learned that there is yet another familiar face coming on board The Walking Dead season 9 for some sort of guest gig.

AMC announced this weekend that Sonequa Martin-Green, who played the part of Sasha on the series for many years, is going to be officially back in some capacity. (She is rather busy at the moment because of Star Trek: Discover.) Meanwhile, she will be joined by Jon Bernthal (whose return was first teased weeks ago) alongside Scott Wilson. You may have heard the tragic news last night that Wilson recently died at the age of 76; his appearance on the series was filmed earlier this year.

In bringing these people back, we hope that The Walking Dead is planning some sort of enormous farewell for Andrew Lincoln with his character of Rick Grimes set to depart the show. Our hope is that there are still some actors returning who have not been spoiled in some capacity. Take, for example, Sarah Wayne Callies. Wouldn’t it be wonderful to be able to see Lori on the series. Or, what about getting a reprise from Chandler Riggs as Carl?

In the end, one of the biggest things that The Walking Dead does have going for it as a series is that they’ve got one of the deepest benches out there in terms of great cast members who can return to the series in some capacity. Because they’ve had so many great performers and, beyond that, because they’ve also killed off so many characters over time. There are very few original cast members left, and with Lincoln leaving, another one of the greats is gone. Norman Reedus and Melissa McBride are two of the other holdovers from the first season, but those two actors were actually both recurring way back when and weren’t even considered regulars in season 1.
