The Walking Dead actor Scott Wilson (Hershel) dead at 76

Hershel

There is some very sad news coming in tonight in regards to The Walking Dead and one of its more notable stars from the early years. Scott Wilson, who you may know better for his character of Hershel, has died at the age of 76. Per TMZ, the actor passed due to complications from leukemia.

The news of Wilson’s passing comes after reports emerged earlier today that he will be making a return appearance as the character in some shape or form on this upcoming season. We imagine that this either a dream sequence or a flashback, and it is absolutely one that will be even more touching to see now. (Wilson filmed his return to The Walking Dead earlier this year.)

In a statement tonight, the comics’ official Twitter account had the following to say:

“We are deeply saddened to report that Scott Wilson, the incredible actor who played Hershel…  has passed away at the age of 76. Our thoughts are with his family and friends. Rest in paradise, Scott. We love you!”

Being a part of this show is in many ways like being a part of a rather large family, and that is a role that Wilson seemed to very much welcome and embrace. He attended conventions, gave back to many of the fans, and understood his role and the purpose that he had in the larger universe. The role of Hershel still does live on through his daughter Maggie, who remains an integral part of the show. The entire second season set around Hershel’s farm was integral to the development of the story and these characters; that was, after all, back when The Walking Dead was very much still a series on the rise.

New episodes of The Walking Dead will premiere on AMC come Sunday night, and we hope that the figures out some sort of way in which to honor him. Wilson had a film and TV career that lasted for five decades. He was a gifted actor and also a very caring man based on the words from all who knew him. He will be missed. (Photo: AMC.)
