Manifest episode 2 ratings slide, as does Magnum PI; The Neighborhood starts so-so
The biggest hit we saw, at least in terms of a new program last week, was Manifest getting off to a great start. This week, however, it slid more than 20% to a 1.8 rating in the demo. While that is not necessarily a terrible performance for the show by any means (it would easily get renewed with that), we did have some hope that it could be the rare network show to actually stay above a 2.0 rating for longer than just a week.
It’s fairly common for new programs to lose more than 20% after their premiere, which is why we cannot be all that shocked to see that Magnum PI slipped to a 0.9 in week two. Yet, this rating does squelch some of our hope that this could be one of the first fall series to be given a back nine episode order. It may still very well happen, but it needs to stabilize its live viewership, especially since expectations are a little bit higher on Monday nights. One of the problems it and Bull (0.8) both ran into is that they aired after The Neighborhood, which started with an okay 1.3 rating, and then Happy Together with a 1.0. These shows aren’t providing the cushion that The Big Bang Theory or Young Sheldon provided a week ago.
The ratings winner of the night was The Voice with a 2.0, which means that it actually toppled Manifest this week after the drama actually premiered to a stronger overall number. The truth now is that so many of these ratings are misleading given that there’s a habit these days of viewers just checking out television after the fact. Somewhere along the way networks are going to have to come up with a different measurement to figure out where their shows actually standing with viewers since people watch television very differently now.
