Bull season 3 spoilers: Cable’s mom officially coming on board

Bull season 2 episode 7

The Bull season 3 premiere on Monday night delivered many different surprises, with the status of Cable being at the top of the list. The character was killed off during the premiere after a bridge collapse, and it feels like there’s still so much more story to be told here — not so much in her death, but the impact that it has on everyone who knew her. Bull’s team has lost a valuable team member, and beyond that a close friend for many different characters.

So why did things happen this way? Basically, the writers took this as an opportunity to challenge the remaining characters, but also use this death as a jumping-off point for some more action coming up. Here’s some of what executive producer Glenn Gordon Caron had to say on the matter of Annabelle Attanasio’s exit and more via TVLine:

Annabelle, who’s a terrific actress, came to us about three-quarters of the way through last season and said, “I have this opportunity that means the world to me. is there any way we could make that work?” I said to the network at the time that the idea of having someone in the cast who wants to be someplace else made no sense to me. I also thought that this was an interesting opportunity, creating a storyline about this person who one day just doesn’t show up for work. I don’t want to tell you too much more, but this is really the beginning of that mystery, not the ending of it. There’s more to it. It all came together slowly, because metaphorically the ground beneath Bull’s feet had shifted so much. “Oh my gosh, I almost died!”

Also, another key mystery has been solved now: Jill Hennessy, whose casting was announced over the summer, is going to be playing Cable’s mother. It’s clear that she is going to have an emotional story to tell, which makes sense given that she is playing a grieving mother — We wonder if she ends up hiring TAC for some sort of wrongful-death suit revolving around her daughter? If so, it’s the most personal case that all of TAC has taken on since the start of the series.
