Could Grey’s Anatomy season 16 be final season? Ellen Pompeo speculates

Is it possible Grey’s Anatomy could actually end with season 16? It’s a strange thing to think about, mostly because we’re talking here about a show that’s been on longer than some of its viewers have probably been alive. It’s an iconic part of TV history and a show that will be probably remembered for decades.

Considering where it is right now in the ratings, it’s also fairly easy to say that it could be on the air for another five or ten years if the cast and crew wanted it … but that may not be the case. As a part of a new cover story with Entertainment Weekly, series star Ellen Pompeo made it clear that she’s not entirely sure at the moment if she wants to continue the show beyond season 16 — that hasn’t been officially ordered yet, but she has signed a contract that lasts until then:

“I’m clearly not prepared right now to make any formal announcement about what my future is on the show, but I am really feeling like we have told the majority of the stories that we can tell … It’s about time that I mix it up. I’m definitely looking for a change.”

Granted, remember that a “change” doesn’t necessarily have to mean that the show ends. It’s possible that Grey’s Anatomy could opt for shorter seasons down the road, or there could be some dramatic change in format to give Pompeo a new acting challenge. We don’t think that the show is going to continue without its title character; that’s at least the suggestion that’s been made over the years about it.

Another thing to remember? We’re probably a year away from when some of these decisions will need to be locked in. A good bit can change within that time.
