Big Brother 21 renewal hasn’t happened yet; what gives with that?

Big brother 20

While we’ve talked a great deal about Big Brother and some stories related to the show as of late, here’s one that has been very much overlooked. Shockingly, CBS has yet to renew the series for a 21st season, despite this being a summer stable for a rather long time.

Do we think in theory that it’s going to be back? Absolutely. The season is consistently pulling in live ratings around a 1.5 rating in the 18-49 demographic, the most important measure for a show’s success. While this is down versus the live ratings for season 19, that’s par for the course with TV these days.

For those wondering, the lack of drama the past few weeks hasn’t really had much of an impact on the ratings – and it rarely does. What tends to happen with Big Brother is that most of the people who start a season tend to finish; it’s at the start that most seasons tend to falter a little bit in terms of the numbers. The numbers aren’t often impacted all that much by controversies or other drama in-season, either.

It’s easy to see why Big Brother would be renewed for more, given the fact that this show makes a ton of money with All Access subscriptions in addition to the ratings for the live shows itself. While it does cost a good bit to staff the house and set up the competitions, it’s always been a show interpreted to be incredibly profitable.

So what’s the holdup? We do think that CBS has had their hands full as of late with everything related to Les Moonves, and that’s probably a big component to it. There is also the uncertain future of Julie Chen; she will reportedly host through the end of the season, but after that, the future is unclear. We also don’t think that some within the network are altogether happy with some of the controversies on the show this season regarding JC (how could they be?), so we wouldn’t be shocked if there is a review of the rules after the season.

In the end, we’re still confident that Big Brother will be renewed — it’s mostly a matter of when.
