Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin says show could’ve lasted longer
Speaking per Variety while on the Emmys red carpet today, the series author made it clear that showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss are the ones who made the decision to end it — and he gave a rather-amusing explanation as to why:
“I don’t know [why it’s ending]. Ask David and Dan when they come through … We could have gone to 11, 12, 13 seasons, but I guess they wanted a life.”
“If you’ve read my novels, you know there was enough material for more seasons. They made certain cuts.”
Ultimately, we do think that Game of Thrones also could have done more episodes in the final seasons, but our sentiment here mostly is that the production was so massive by the end that eventually, the show couldn’t really do too many more episodes without having to make the wait between seasons even longer. These are basically super-long movies at this point and that makes them rather different from the standard show.
It’s certainly possible that Game of Thrones could have lasted longer but personally, we’re glad that it’s ending when it is — it has an opportunity here to conclude its story on a high note, when viewers are still talking about it. Plus, there are still ways in which HBO is going to extend the life of the franchise, with the biggest one seemingly being the spin-off that they are currently planning. It may not premiere for some time still, but Martin is also involved on some level as a new writer in Jane Goldman aims to make it the best show that it can possibly be.
