America’s Got Talent finalist spotlight: The status of Samuel J. Comroe

Samuel J. Comroe

Leading up to the America’s Got Talent finale, there are probably eight different performers out of the ten taking part who we feel have a legitimate shot of performing really well and finishing in the top five. Samuel J. Comroe is one of those people.

Being a comedian on this show is often really tough, mostly because you need to find a way to constantly deliver laughs to a family audience in a reasonably-short period of time. It can at times also be a difficult room — maybe someone right before you just came out and performed some sort of super-depressing ballad and now, you’re put in a position where you have to make people chuckle. It’s not easy because there are plenty of people often unprepared for humor.

Yet, what Samuel has done a great job at this season is sticking to his jokes and finding a way to play the crowd into the set. He creates a good rapport with them and then builds over a couple of minutes towards some great punchlines at the end. While his humor is personal, it’s also not solely based on his comedic character. He has great observations of others, but is also not afraid to make fun of himself. We know that his background and his story has been a part of his story for us, but it hasn’t been the only part of his story.

What are his winner odds?

Samuel right now is an underdog and it would be foolish at this point to even dispute that. He needed the Dunkin’ Save to get here and he’s probably never going to get near-universal love from the judges since Heidi Klum may very well be the harshest comedy critic of all time. Yet, we’ve seen comedians like Taylor Williamson perform very well on this show even when Heidi doesn’t often love them; we could foresee him getting into the top five or maybe even the top three depending on the night. He’s got an uphill battle to win given that there are such clearly-established favorites, but anything is possible. It would be nice to see a comedian win this show eventually.

One thing that could hurt Samuel is just that he is not the only comedian performing in the finale — after all, Vicki Barbolak is also there.
