Madam Secretary season 5 exec on getting Hillary Clinton on board

So how did the show manage to get Clinton on board? Apparently, much of it started with a conversation that executive producer Lori McCreary had with the former First Lady at a birthday party for her husband and former President Bill Clinton. At the time, she apparently wanted to play a spy (perhaps jokingly so), but McCreary tells Entertainment Weekly that she came around to the idea of playing herself:
“I said, would you ever play yourself? … And she said, ‘I’d consider it.’ But it was a party, so you think maybe people are just making small talk. So when we confirmed that she really wanted to do it, we were excited.’”
While we know that this guest spot is a one-episode gig, we do hope that there is some sort of wisdom or advice Clinton passes down that can be a part of the rest of the season. We like to see these appearances have a little more staying power on the show beyond just a cameo. Still, we are grateful that Hillary is appearing, largely because it’s a chance to boost the show’s ratings — and it doesn’t often get a lot of publicity on its own.
