Is Big Little Lies season 2 set for a spring premiere? Why it could work
Let’s start this article off by making it clear that there is no official Big Little Lies season 2 premiere date over at HBO. Yet, there’s a reason to think that it could be coming up the spring.
Yesterday, the network unveiled the first teaser trailer for True Detective season 3, and with that also confirmed that the anthology series would be returning in January. Add to this now a recent interview that suggested that Game of Thrones season 8 would not be eligible for the 2019 Emmys — which suggests that it may not premiere until June.
Now, this brings us back to Big Little Lies as a late March / early April premiere would be the perfect way for the network to bridge the gap between the two series. For starters, that would give the network one tentpole after the next after the next. It’s a good way to retain subscribers, and while they may be making things more difficult on themselves in terms of awards-show competition, that can be a good thing when all of the programming is at your own network.
Ultimately, we definitely do think that Big Little Lies will be ready for release by the spring. This has already wrapped up filming and given that it’s a character-based drama series, there isn’t a bevy of special-effects work that needs to be done. It’s not like Game of Thrones, which is going to be working on this very thing until presumably May.
For now, we are all waiting for the official HBO announcement, which could come in January at the TCA Winter Press Tour. Yet, at the same time we do feel reasonably confident that the series is going to be coming back at some point in between True Detective and Game of Thrones.
