Bodyguard series premiere ratings strong for BBC One; no US broadcast partner yet
The BBC series, which stars Richard Madden (Game of Thrones) as a military veteran tasked with having to protect a polarizing politician he doesn’t find himself agreeing with, brought in a total of 6.9 million viewers across Sunday night. This makes it the most-watched series premiere in the UK in 2018, and that certainly bodes well for its long-term future. Beyond just that, we do think that there are going to be some interested parties in it stateside. While PBS has become a home for many British dramas, the majority of them are not as contemporary as this one. Bodyguard feels like more of a natural fit for either a streaming service like Netflix or BBC America, where it can be marketed still as a weekly series using some of Madden’s star power. Even if he was only on three seasons of Game of Thornes, that’s still enough to make him memorable to millions of people out there.

The network has gone hard in their efforts to launch Bodyguard as a big hit, which is why there is another episode of it airing on the network tonight. This is a tool being used to try and get the show some early momentum so that it can keep that up for the remainder of the season. This is a fairly short season of just six episodes, but that’s probably a part of why it could be so successful. By the time the season comes to a close, most people out there could be left wanting more. That’s the beauty of shorter seasons.
