Speaking per The Hollywood Reporter, Drew said that she found out about her exit (which was not her choice) while actually shadowing her co-star / frequent episode director Kevin McKidd to prepare for her B-Team duty. She also admitted that while it was sad and hard to leave the show, she is excited to move on and do other things now:
“[Being let go] was painful when it happened but, in retrospect, I think it would have been hard for me to walk away from that job. I was on it for nine years. It feels right and it feels like a good time to move onto something else with all the great love in my heart that I have for everybody and respect and gratitude for what that experience was. Playing a character for nine years is a long haul.'”
As for whether or not she’d be interested in return to Grey’s Anatomy as either an actor or director in the future, Drew had one simple response: “Maybe.” She’s not ruling it out, but it doesn’t seem like she is chomping at the bit to rush back tomorrow, either. She had already hoped to move on by starring in CBS’ pilot Cagney & Lacey alongside Michelle Hurd, but that was unfortunately not picked up to series. We certainly think that there are going to be more chances coming up for Drew to advance her career, and it mostly comes down to precisely whatever it is that she wants to do next — she’s got plenty of time in order to think about it and choose roles that are right for her. That is one of the great things about being on a show like Grey’s Anatomy for a solid nine years; it does afford you the chance to think about your future before moving on to do other things.
