Dynasty season 2: Ana Brenda Contreras set to ‘replace’ Nathalie Kelley

Well, Dynasty season 2 just got even crazier than we imagined it would be thanks to Ana Brenda Contreras signing on.

If you recall, earlier this summer Nathalie Kelley effectively revealed that she would not be returning to the CW Friday-night series after her character Cristal was (seemingly) killed off at the end of the first season. Her death wasn’t necessarily guaranteed, and we say that mostly knowing that this is the sort of show where all sorts of crazy stuff can happen.

We feel in a lot of ways like the latest news is validation of that very thing. Contreras is set to appear in the second season as the “real Cristal,” which suggests that Kelley’s character through the entirety of the first season was just some sort of impersonator. Network programming head Mark Pedowitz noted (per Deadline) while TCA this morning that he was “a little surprised [Kelley] spoiled the surprise” in announcing that she would not be returning, yet, he also claimed that they “have plans for other characters too. (Showrunner) Sallie (Patrick) has fun twist and turns in store.” Apparently, the plan to create a new Cristal has been in the works since midseason.

So how is all of this going to work? Pedowitz would not say much other than just that this show is a soap, and this is the sort of crazy stuff that many soaps choose to do. Having someone pretend to be someone else is really just par for the course with this particular type of television.

Dynasty season 2 will premiere on The CW this fall and really, we think that the situation of Cristal is really just scratching the surface of some of the things that the producers need to address. They also just have to figure out a way in which to get some other viewers hooked on the series, largely because the first season of the show struggled in the ratings and that was one of the reasons for the Friday move in the first place.
