Feud season 2 with Prince Charles, Princess Diana not happening
This series is one that has been in development for a rather long time — think all the way back to last year. Yet, there was never anyone cast in either one of the roles and there was never an official writer for the series. There were different ideas that were floated about, but it doesn’t seem as though anything came together.
Yet, what FX Networks head John Landgraf made clear today at TCA (via Entertainment Weekly) is that the decision to move away from this idea has nothing to do with The Crown, which is encroaching into similar territory in some of its upcoming seasons:
“It’s not because of The Crown … I think there was a very different approach. I happen to really like The Crown. But it’s told from the point of view of the royal family. This is told from the point of view of somebody coming into that family a la Meghan Markle. Ultimately, we couldn’t get the material to the place we wanted.”
Murphy is now an extremely busy man, as he is balancing out his current FX series including Pose, American Horror Story, and American Crime Story with also his new deal over at FX. The future of American Crime Story has also been in question over the years, with a long-delayed Hurricane Katrina story being at the center of it. The most-recent iteration of that idea had it shifting over to a hospital setting to recreate some of the terrible decisions that were made there in a desperate time.
The first season of Feud starred Jessica Lange and Susan Sarandon as Joan Crawford and Bette Davis, and it went on to be a critical and commercial success for FX. Given the subject matter, you had to imagine that season 2 would’ve been at least even bigger in terms of the ratings.
