Will Mayans MC have a big Sons of Anarchy presence?

Over the course of Mayans MC starting this September, could we get a number of Sons of Anarchy references and Easter eggs?

Let’s start things off with this: It’s fairly clear why there would be a demand for this. Sons of Anarchy is one of the greatest basic-cable series to have ever come on the air. It is intense, dramatic, and introduced us to a number of excellent characters. It makes sense that you would wonder what’s happening with some of the surviving characters within this world.

Yet, at the same time you have to respect that Mayans MC is a show doing its own thing. It is set within a different environment and it deserves a chance to tell its own story. While it exists after Jax Teller, life does go on. With that, we don’t think that some of the characters in Southern California (remember, it’s set in a different part of the state) are spending all that much time having huge conversations about the current state of SAMCRO.

In speaking more about this particular subject to Entertainment Weekly while at San Diego Comic-Con, Mayans MC co-creator Kurt Sutter had the following to say:

“It’s a balance. I want to acknowledge that world and find opportunities to circle that again, and yet I don’t want to abuse it … The show takes place in real time, so it’s post-Jax Teller. Three years or so has passed. I’m really protective of that mythology and the way it ended and letting fans — whether they enjoyed it or not — to have that experience and their idea of how that club continued and how those relationships continued. I really want to leave in the minds of the fans. There’s no intersecting stories that will interfere with that, but Sons was a big world and there was a lot of peripheral energy and players and members and other charters, so there will be those kind of intersections. We’ll see those points of intersection happen throughout this season, and the series as well.”

Ultimately, we just hope that there are some surprises along the way and some of the cameos are not announced in advance. They should just feel like organic parts of the universe and not just things that are meant to stand out for the sake of attention.
