Better Call Saul season 4 wasn’t rushed for the sake of the Emmys

Better Call Saul season 4

It was rather strange for all of the Emmy nominations to be announced recently and to not have Better Call Saul not listed as a possible nominee — yet, there was a pretty clear reason for it. After all, the AMC series wasn’t eligible! For the first time since it debuted, there were no new episodes within the eligibility window — season 4 doesn’t premiere until August, and this batch of episodes is going to be eligible when we get around to the 2019 Emmys happening next summer. That’s a long time to wait, but those within the Better Call Saul universe are likely used to waiting. After all, we’ve all done it before moving into season 4.

One of the reasons for the delay between season 3 and season 4 is simply so the writers could make the best season possible. There’s probably more pressure on the team now than ever before, largely because season 4 has to bridge more of the gap between the prequel series and Breaking Bad — there’s no guarantee that we’ll get all the way there this season, but when you get closer to the original show, there is more work to be done when it comes to making sure that the narratives line up correctly.

Ultimately, making sure that the series is great is more important than the cast just scooping up a number of Emmy Awards. This is something that producer Melissa Bernstein confirmed further to IndieWire:

“We just have to make the show the best we can make it … We can’t retrofit it to an awards schedule

Bernstein also made it clear that the Emmys are not something that show executive producer Vince Gilligan doesn’t focus on all that much, and we know that many of the other members of the cast and crew feel the same way. Given all of the love that the series has received over the years, that probably does help — there is a sort of validation that they all already have that they have a great show and great fans; they can just focus on catering towards them.
