The Originals season 5 episode 12 spoilers: Klaus returns to Mystic Falls

For those who want to see a particular blast from the past, The Originals season 5 episode 12 is going to fulfill that and then some. A good percentage of this episode is going to be set within the world of Mystic Falls, which is significant for fans of The Vampire Diaries coupled with people who also want to see some old favorites turn up on the series. Matt Davis and Candice King are each going to return within this episode, and for Davis in particular, this is meant to be a precursor to his role in Legacies, the spin-off series that is also going to star Danielle Rose Russell as hope.

In other words, no matter how much danger Hope is in right now, she’s going to be doing more than just surviving within this episode — she will have a chance to star on her own series down the line. As for everyone else, it feels like there are a million different things that could happen.

RETURN TO MYSTIC FALLS — With Hope (Danielle Rose Russell) facing a life-threatening affliction and deteriorating quickly, Klaus (Joseph Morgan) travels to Mystic Falls to seek help from Caroline (guest star Candice King). Tasked with keeping Hope preoccupied in Mystic Falls, Elijah (Daniel Gillies) comes to a heartbreaking realization about his niece. Meanwhile, at the Salvatore School for the Young and Gifted, a run-in with Alaric Saltzman (guest star Matthew Davis) throws a wrench into Klaus’ plan. Charles Michael Davis also stars. Rudy Persico directed the episode written by Carina Adly MacKenzie & Julie Plec (#512). Original airdate 7/25/2018.

The appeal of this episode feels obvious from the jump — but given that this is the penultimate episode of the entire series, it also needs to be about so much more than just nostalgia.
