The Conners star John Goodman books another show

John Goodman

John Goodman is already a series regular on the Roseanne spin-off The Conners, but apparently, that is not stopping him from doing another gig, as well.

Per a report from Deadline, Goodman has signed on to appear in the pilot for The Righteous Gemstones, a comedy that is coming to you courtesy of Eastbound and Down / Vice Principals alum Danny McBride. This series, which is being done by McBride alongside his longtime collaborator Jody Hill, will be set within the world of televangelism. McBride plays Jesse Gemstone, a man ripe with arrogance and intent on expanding a religious TV world kicked off by his father Eli, someone who created “a long tradition of deviance, greed, and charitable work, all in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ.” We’ve got a feeling that this is going to be a messy, controversial, and crazy show — basically, just like everything else that we’ve seen over the years with McBride.

Now, it does make sense to question whether or not this series could end up interfering with Goodman’s already-established work. Here’s how things could shake down — Goodman will film the pilot for the HBO series before starting up work as Dan Conner; then, if The Righteous Gemstones is picked up to series, he could go over and do that show. Given that many of McBride’s series often only run for a short period of time, there is a way in theory that Goodman could continue to do both shows. Yet, that could end up being really exhausting if it’s something that he keeps up in the long-term.

For now, though, signs points towards The Conners premiering on ABC in the fall — following that, there should be plenty of time to assess whatever is going to come next for Goodman.
