Absentia season 2: The case for more Papa Byrne
Throughout a handful of season 1 episodes, we had a chance to meet Emily’s father Warren, a retired police officer and fiercely-loyal father who took no prisoners, was fantastically defiant during the FBI investigation against his daughter, and defended her to the ends of the Earth. He was both a badass and a pretty instant fan favorite throughout the first season, and with that, we cannot help but want more of him for season 2.
So how do you use this character moving into season 2? In our mind, one of the easiest ways to do so is as a resource. This is a man who has seen a lot of things in his time on the force, and with that, he’s a valuable person to go to for either advice or contacts. Even if he is no longer sporting a badge, we could see Emily going to him for help if she gets into a bind during season 2. Warren strikes us as a person who’s never really out of the cop game, so he would probably be more than happy to help if there was an opportunity for him to do so.
Beyond just this, of course, having him as Emily’s father is valuable in its own right. She’s someone who may have some serious trust issues in light of all of her past trauma, and her father could be one of the people remaining she trusts implicitly. Even if we only see Paul Freeman in four or five episodes of season 2, those are four or five episodes we will treasure.
Absentia season 2 is slated to premiere at some point in 2019. While it has been effectively renewed, there is no word as of yet as to if Amazon will continue broadcasting the series.
