Better Call Saul season 4 could have more Breaking Bad ‘overlap’

Better Call Saul season 4

When Better Call Saul season 4 premieres on AMC a little bit later this summer, one of the things that you’re going to see above all else is a journey creeping ever closer to the days of Breaking Bad. That obviously makes a certain degree of sense given where season 3 ended, especially with Jimmy mourning his brother Chuck and losing much of what may have offered, at least by some measure, a moral compass. There are now more opportunities for him to go off the rails, and given how much we’ve come to care about Jimmy, that is going to make it all the more heartbreaking when he ends up becoming Saul down the line.

As dark as the upcoming season may be, odds are you’re fairly comfortable with this territory if you are a fan of this franchise. This is, after all, the sort of material that Vince Gilligan has taken on some deftly in the past. He’s certainly excited about it, just based on what he had to say on the subject to The Hollywood Reporter:

“Season four is so good. It gets darker, it gets richer. It’s still got funny in it, but on the Venn diagram of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul, the overlap in the center is getting bigger and bigger.”

Does this necessarily mean that season 4 is going to focus on events we’ve already seen in Breaking Bad? Not necessarily, but we could see Jimmy hover around some other characters who are a part of that story in some way. We actually wouldn’t mind if season 4 caught up to the start of Breaking Bad in general, largely so that our dream of having a season 5 centered almost entirely around Gene could become a reality. That’s the story we really want told at this particular point, given that it offers up chances to see some element of mystery once more.
