MasterChef season 9 episode 6 review: A banana cream pie crisis
Here, we’ll at least given the editors some credit for making the showdown seem at least marginally close. We thought for a time that Darrick had sunk the blue team with making too many mistakes with the chicken, but we saw a number of diners turning their noses up at the red team’s fish and chips.
So who did the blue team blame for some of their follies? There was a lot of anger at Chelsea, the Team Captain for the challenge, for what they felt was some questionable leadership. That anger intensified further when Chelsea chose to save some of the people that she did from doing the Pressure Test, mostly because they were friendly to her.
The pressure test itself was themed around having to make the perfect banana cream pie and this, by some measure, was also fairly routine and predictable. The same goes for the elimination that came at the end of the episode. We don’t want to beat up on Darrick too much here because he seems like a nice guy, but the biggest problem that we saw with him tonight was just that he was out of his element. With the banana cream pie, he forgot the vanilla and, shockingly, he had never made whipped cream before. For the first time in MasterChef history, we may have figured out something that we can do that a contestant on the show cannot.
The moment that the whipped-cream crisis came to light, it felt rather clear all of a sudden that we were going to see Darrick end up saying goodbye to the competition — even if there were some other problems that we saw along the way.
CarterMatt Verdict
We’ll say that Masterchef season 9 episode 6 was one of those episodes that you have every season — ones where almost everything is a little by the numbers and it’s clear who would go home. Darrick is gone, but it was clear even last week that he could be in trouble if the right challenge came about.
