Shadowhunters fans to fly banner over Netflix Studios
As you can see over at the link here, there is a plan in place at present for fans to fly a #SaveShadowhunters banner above Netflix Studios in Los Angeles. (For those wondering, their corporate building is located at 5808 Sunset Boulevard.) The banner is set to fly from 11:00 a.m. until around 2:00 p.m. Pacific time. It’s a move that is somewhat similar to what fans of The Expanse did earlier this year as they purchased a banner to fly over Amazon Studios. In that case, it ended up working and Amazon picked up the series for an additional season.
When it comes to said banner’s effect on the future of Shadowhunters, it’s hard to ever predict success or failure with these sort of things. Nonetheless, we’re super-curious to see how this plays out on social media and whether or not it gets Netflix’s attention. Do we think that they are already aware of the widespread campaign out there to save the show? Absolutely. We see this entire issue as coming down to this question: Will Shadowhunters be the sort of show that either adds new subscribers to Netflix or keep people who have subscribed already?
When you think about a service like Netflix, a huge part of their economics is based on subscribers just as much as it is viewership, and this can be a complicated thing to gauge. They want shows that are popular, but also ones that they can attach to a specific monetary value. For them, the merit in picking up shows like Lucifer and Longmire was that there was not only a demand for them, but there was clearly enough of a push online to make a big difference. In the case of Lucifer, this is especially clear since Netflix had to jump through some more hoops in order to make this happen, including get the streaming rights shifted over given that they were originally over at Hulu.
Basically, if Netflix thinks that they’re benefiting in some way from Shadowhunters beyond just making some devoted fans happy, there’s a chance that they could pick it up. Just remember, even with this banner in mind, to look at other options and campaign to them, as well. Don’t throw all of your metaphorical eggs into the Netflix basket just because they recently saved another show.
Of course, we’ll come back Friday with some photos from the flyover if we end up seeing them.
