Emmy Preview 2018: Supporting Actor in a Limited Series / TV Movie wishlist; vote for your favorite!
Who should be nominated for Supporting Actor in a Limited Series / TV Movie at the 2018 Primetime Emmy Awards? We are back with another edition of our annual CarterMatt Emmy Preview Series to answer this very question!
This year, what makes the Supporting Actor field so interesting is the potential of many different actors ultimately canceling each other act. When you think about shows like American Horror Story: Cult, The Terror, and The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story, there are shows with huge casts and inevitably, we could see as a result of that multiple people from the same shows battling it out. This is a great field, but ultimately just five performers are going to make it onto the list. Over the course of this article, we’ll do our best to pinpoint just who these five are.
In addition to sharing our dream nominees, at the bottom of this article is a poll for you to vote for your own favorites! We will announce our reader picks on July 11, 2018, one day before the actual Emmy nominations are announced. Hopefully, this is a way to kick off the Emmy campaign period in a fun, super-engaging manner for everyone.
Voting Rules – Vote however many times you like! Voting is open between now and 1:00 p.m. Pacific time on July 11. By voting, you consent to have your vote tabulated in the final result. As a reminder, CarterMatt polls are simply for fun and to help aid in Emmy campaigns. Voting for the Emmys themselves is conducted by members of the Television Academy.

CarterMatt Wishlist – Supporting Actor in a Limited Series / TV Movie
Jeff Daniels, Godless (Netflix) – Anytime you get Daniels on one of your shows, there’s a good chance that you are going to get a raw, passionate performance that utilizes both his range and earthiness. While Frank Griffin isn’t exactly a likable figure for much of Godless, he is still an important figure to be understood and recognized. Daniels gives the character some humanity, while also exhibiting both with his words and his actions why he should be feared as an outlaw. He was precisely what you would want for a character within this world. Thanks to The Looming Tower, there is also a chance Daniels becomes a double-nominee.
Tobias Menzies, The Terror (AMC) – Menzies brought a sense of stoic power to his role of James Fitzjames, but also a sense of underlying uncertainty. As you dive into the depths of this man you start to understand more of his pain, and few actors give you this sense of range and introspection quite like Menzies. Fitzjames in some ways started the expedition wrestling with power by nature of his experience. We do think that he discovered a part of himself through the journey, but also experienced suffering by the end of it that may even surpass everything he knew beforehand.
Bill Pullman, The Sinner (USA) – There is a reason why USA is moving forward now with a second season of this show with Pullman as the lead — he brought so much to the role of Harry Ambrose, a troubled detective interested in the pursuit of justice while also tackling some serious demons along the way. This first season allowed you an opportunity to really dive in and try to understand who Ambrose is and why he is so attached to the case of Cora Tannetti. Pullman did an exceptional job conveying that, while also allowing us to dive into a personal life that was in perpetual disarray.
Edgar Ramirez, The Assassination of Gianni Versace (FX) – Given the title of the show, you would want to see a fantastic, memorable performance from the man who played Versace. Luckily, we do think that you have that here in Ramirez, who breathed so much life and charisma into the man he was assigned to play. Even though Versace did not appear in every episode of the season, the man was still a beacon in terms of his impact; also, you understand more of why Andrew Cunanan had the sentiment that he did towards him. Ramirez was fantastic every step of the way.
Michael Shannon, Fahrenheit 451 (HBO) – Captain Beatty is an iconic character within the world of the source material, mostly because of his paradoxical nature and the sheer power that he possesses. He’s an easy figure to draw a quick impression of only to have that completely diverted as you understand more about him. Michael Shannon was the perfect actor to deliver both on his presence and then also the power of his words — coupled with the character’s understanding of them. This was an especially memorable performance, once made all the better by the fact that it happened amidst so much pressure to get the role right.
