Sara Gilbert addresses Roseanne cancellation on The Talk, stands by original statement

For the first time since the cancellation of Roseanne last week, former cast member / executive producer Sara Gilbert, who was one of the people who got the ball rolling on the revival in the first place, is speaking out about what happened and the aftermath of it.

Speaking on Monday’s edition of The Talk, Gilbert acknowledged the pain that the cancellation has caused (hundreds of jobs were lost thanks to Roseanne Barr’s racist post on Twitter); with that being said, she also made it clear that she felt ABC made the right decision in canceling the series based on what happened:

“I would like to say this has been a very difficult week. A lot of people have been hurt by this … I will say I’m proud of the show we made … [This show] has always been about diversity, love and inclusion and it’s sad to see it end in this way. I’m sad for the people who lost their jobs in the process. However, I do stand behind the decision that ABC made.”

Gilbert’s comments were met with a lot of applause from the audience in attendance for the show’s taping, and it does seem as though the idea of there being more of the series sans Roseanne is far from over. According to reports there are some potential talks about continuing the series while writing Barr out of it; the clear issue that comes along with this is finding a way in which it can happen without compensating Barr in the process. Given her close ties to the show (it is named after her, after all), this is not going to be an easy thing to do. We consider it a toss-up, mostly because all of the effort that ABC may put into trying to find a way to bring the show back may not be worth it, when the dust settles.
