Last Week Tonight with John Oliver: Guardianship, senior citizens focus of main segment

Last Week Tonight

The main segment on Sunday night’s edition of Last Week Tonight with John Oliver concerned the sort of subject that everyone should really think about, but in turn very few people do: Taking care of senior citizens in need. This brings you to guardianship, a subject matter that really does need to be discussed. There are so many people out there who can mistreat the elderly — the whole idea of guardianship and having someone take care of you and your affairs can fall apart.

When it comes to presenting facts, information, and testimonials, Oliver brought plenty of that to the table tonight talking about what sort of horrors await some people who are forced to deal with a guardian who they don’t trust or who takes advantage of them on some level. There were some moments in here that were especially funny –there was one part in the segment when Oliver briefly alluded to some recent headlines, saying the word “feckless” as a reference to Samantha Bee before deciding that it just wasn’t worth it to continue further. (Oliver and Bee worked together on The Daily Show so this was a jab that was certainly good-natured.)

At the tail end of the segment tonight, you had appearances from Fred Willard, William Shatner, and others talking about guardianship and the importance of finding the right person in order to properly take care of you. There were also jokes aplenty about naming Tom Hanks your proper guardian.

Was there a lot of new information that we learned about guardianship through this? Not so much, as this felt a little bit more like a segment designed to remind you of the importance of taking care of yourself and others. Nonetheless, it was still funny, and the current-events portion of the show remained intact beforehand.
