Summer TV Preview: Will AMC’s Dietland be one of the season’s biggest hits?

There are a number of different ambitious shows coming on the air this summer, but one of the biggest ones is Dietland, which is premiering on AMC come Monday night. This is a series that is coming into the series with a lot of super-high expectations mostly because of some of the people involved — executive producer Marti Noxon is helping to run things behind the scenes, and the show also marks the return of Julianna Margulies to television following her time on The Good Wife.

It is the presence of Margulies, we feel, that will help to bring people on board the show. Yet, at the forefront of it is Plum Kettle (Joy Nash), a woman who is trying to figure out a way to improve her life. She’s attributed so many of her goals in life to figuring out how to lose weight but, as she discovers in this series, there is so much more to the world than that. Dietland is an emotional journey, it’s dark, and it’s also funny at times. This is a chance for AMC to really get itself back in awards consideration with an original property that has a chance to stick around for a while.

In general, we don’t think that AMC as a network has ever had a show quite like this in terms of tone, in terms of style, and in terms of ambition. Will viewers respond to it? That remains to be seen, but we do think that the video below offers up a great extended look at some of what you can expect to see over the course of the show. It’s the perfect introduction if you are curious about the show and want to add something like it to your primetime viewing lineup.
