Kelsey Grammer heads to Fox for Proven Innocent role

Fox has just landed a major star for its midseason schedule in Kelsey Grammer — and with that, the hopes of people wanting a Frasier revival are probably a little bit dashed.

According to a new report coming in right now via Deadline, Grammer is set to replace Brian D’Arcy James as one of the leads in Proven Innocent, the upcoming legal drama heading to the network from David Elliott and Empire co-creator Danny Strong. This is a show that is going to also feature Under the Dome actress Rachelle Lefevre and hopefully, is going to find a place on a network that certainly needs a few more hits. (We’re still bitter about them canceling Lucifer personally — that’s one going to sting for a while.)

Grammer is playing on the show a man named Gore Bellows, described via the aforementioned site as a “hard-as-nails and tough-on-crime state’s attorney, who goes up against an underdog legal team committed to reopening investigations to exonerate the innocent who were “proven” guilty.” It’s an intriguing role for him that should give him some meaty material, and also potentially give him the runaway hit that he hasn’t had since the NBC comedy. He has done some really fantastic shows, including Boss and The Last Tycoon, but for one reason or another they just couldn’t get some of the fraction that they needed in order to make it to the next level.

We’re certainly rooting for Proven Innocent to work just because Grammer’s a talented guy and, beyond that, we don’t think that there is ever a point where you have too many legal dramas. It’s the sort of thing that networks could keep making for however long they really want to provided that the storytelling and the cast is perfect.
