Instinct, Deception ratings sink hard leading into Memorial Day
CBS this month has made a few different strange decisions regarding Instinct in particular. First, they preempt an episode earlier this month for no good reason other than that apparently, they wanted to air a repeat of 60 Minutes in that spot. Following that, they renewed the series for a second season — we were certainly happy about that, but why are you taking a good opportunity for the show away then? Things got even stranger when it was revealed that there were two episodes airing back to back last night.
When it comes to the Sunday before Memorial Day, one thing is almost always true: The ratings are often terrible for every show on the lineup. Given that Monday is a holiday for the vast majority of people, that basically turns the day before into a Saturday — and Saturdays are always terrible when it comes to ratings. There’s a reason that AMC decided to give Fear the Walking Dead and Into the Badlands the week off.
The two episodes of Instinct drew a 0.4 and 0.3 rating in the 18-49 demographic last night, which by far were the worst ratings of the season for the show. That was bad, and the same goes for having this be the first airing of new episodes in the past couple of weeks. Why are you bringing the show back on the air after a hiatus on a night in which viewers already aren’t around? If the show was going to have this sort of hiatus we would’ve reconfigured things where it took this week off and simply did a couple of two-hour blocks in June. It would have to be better than this, right?
Meanwhile, the final episodes of Deception over on ABC drew a 0.4 rating — Instinct actually performed much better than it in total viewers, but that series tends to skew older. There’s less to be confused about when it comes to Deception just because of the fact that ABC already canceled it; therefore, they had zero reason to care about whether or not it got great ratings other than trying to boost its own ad revenue — which they think they can probably do via some other shows.
