Poll: Did NCIS, Chicago PD, Chicago Fire, or Grey’s Anatomy have most devastating exit?

Finale Season

In today’s edition of our post-sweeps poll series, we’re taking a look at one of the sadder aspects of finale season — losing characters we love. Sometimes, these people are killed off as a shocking twist. At other points, an actor is leaving a show and the writers have to figure out a more-humane way to tie up the story. It’s never an easy thing to do, but it’s certainly important in order to push things forward.

Below, we’ve got for you some of the exits that, in our mind, are among the most dramatic ones we’ve seen over the past few months. All of these took place either in the finale or reasonably close it — after all, we had to include some notable names from NCIS even if they were not in the episode itself.

Voting Rules – Vote however many times you like! Voting is open between now and 1:00 p.m. Pacific time on Thursday, May 31. We’ll announce a winner of the poll then. By voting, you consent to have your vote tabulated in the final result.

I can’t see the poll; what do I do? – If you’re on mobile, scroll to the bottom and click to view the non-AMP version. If you still can’t, try to either clear your cache or use a different browser/device.

Our picks

Abby Scuito, NCIS – Quite possibly the most high-profile departure on this list. Even though Pauley Perrette’s exit was announced long in advance, that still does not make it altogether easy.

Al Olinsky, Chicago PD – As a means of giving Voight’s actions and the Woods investigation all the more weight, Elias Koteas’ character was killed off at the start of the season 5 finale. We’re still not over it.

April Kepner, Grey’s Anatomy – She’s now happy and off living her life with Matthew, but we are also still sad that a big part of this life is not going to be with us anymore as a viewer.

Arizona Robbins, Grey’s Anatomy – It’s a similar situation here with Arizona, even though her romantic future is a bit more ambiguous. Both Sarah Drew and Jessica Capshaw were written out of the series for what the producers explained to be creative reasons.

Charlotte Richards, Lucifer – You could put the entire show into this list if it doesn’t find a new home, but for now, we’re going with the devastating departure of Tricia Helfer’s character at the hand of Cain in the penultimate episode.

Clayton Reeves, NCIS – We expected to lose Abby, but to see Duane Henry’s character killed off in such a devastating way is something that will be rather haunting for some time. Why did this have to happen like this? It mostly felt like an engine to fuel Abby’s exit.

Donna, Siren – Who would’ve thought we would lose Sibongile Mlambo so early on in the series? This, to us, may be the most surprising exit in terms of it being purely unexpected.

Gabriela Dawson, Chicago Fire – While it was not official that Monica Raymund was leaving the show at the time the finale aired, it now very much is, as she wants to pursue new opportunities.

Harry Wells, The Flash This one is super-interesting in that technically, Tom Cavanagh is still a part of the show. It just seems as though this version of Wells is gone as he wants to be back on Earth-2 with his daughter.

Jared Kalu, The Good Doctor – After everything that Jared went through this past season, it’s great to think that he is going to go off and be happy somewhere. However, why can’t it be with us?

Mike Ross, Suits – He was the focal point of much of the show through seven seasons, so it’s tricky seeing how it could move forward without him.

Quentin Lance, Arrow – There were some opportunities for us to prepare for the death of Sara and Laurel’s father, that still didn’t make it easier to see him take a bullet, sparing the life of Black Siren. (Good news: Paul Blackthorne already has a new gig!)

Rachel Zane, Suits – The moment Meghan Markle’s relationship to Prince Harry started to become serious, you knew that this was happening sooner or later.
