American Idol 16 finale: Maddie Poppe defeats Caleb Lee Hutchinson

American Idol 16 ratings

The American Idol 16 finale has now officially come and gone, and with that, we come bearing some results: Maddie Poppe is the official winner!

Poppe managed to defeat Caleb Lee Hutchinson for the grand prize, and with that, we have to imagine now that her career is going to skyrocket in a new direction — many American Idol winners have found success on the charts after the show, and while there wasn’t a big one the final few seasons other than Phillip Phillips, we do think that she’s got the potential to make some noise after the fact.

Did American Idol voters get it right? Probably, but we think that the larger discuss here needs to be in the format that got us to this point. For example, there really weren’t enough live shows to get us to the big reveal, which is why personally we’d probably prefer if the series moved back to airing on a different night for longer like it did on Fox. That allowed for so much more in terms of personal investment! We wanted to get to know Maddie for longer than we did and see more of what she has to offer as an artist. If you’re going to pay the judges so much money for their efforts, we want to make sure that we’re getting enough out of it!

Ultimately, time will tell as to whether or not Maddie was the best winner — she may be the best now, but we like to judge American Idol winners by how the represent the brand in the years following their time on the show. Part of the pressure here also goes on the record label — the artists have to work hard, but so should some of the other people around them.
