The Voice: Spensha Baker’s original song ‘Old Soul’
When you first listen to this song, it’ll be pretty clear right away that this is right in her wheelhouse — it’s a traditional country ballad with lyrics referencing blue jeans, gasoline, and a number of other familiar topics. At the end of the day, though, this is a love song about withstanding the test of time and what really matters. It’s a song about the basics and it seems to work really well for her.
While we think that there is always a market for country, we do think especially now that there’s an enormous market for nostalgic country music. We’re living now within a culture in which things are moving so quickly and technology is rampant. There is something special about finding those old souls, the people who can strip away much of the bluster and the hyper-modernness of society. We think think that this is in part what this song is about.
Will “Old Soul” help Spensha win The Voice in the end? We do think that she’s got a reasonable shot at it, largely due to the fact that country music often fares well on the show and she’s got the perfect coach in Blake. In terms of voting results online (they are unofficial, mind you) Spensha appears to be the underdog … but we’re not going to be the person who makes the mistake of thinking that she’s incapable of winning. Depending on what happens tonight we could easily see her emerging as the underdog champion.
